Tony and Phil join researchers from Birmingham University excavating the site of William Shakespeare's home, New Place. Containing some 20 rooms, it was at that time the town's largest private house. William Shakespeare - Stratford Upon Avon | Birth Place | Shakespeare's House & School
Shakespeare's family home is fascinating building. Today the parlour, hall, workshop and bed chambers are furnished as they may have looked in 1574, when he house was full of children. William (ten), Gilbert (eight), Joan (five), Anne (three) and baby Richard. Rare items of middle class 16th century furniture are set in the context of carefully researched replica textiles and other domestic items, many of which are mentioned in Shakespeare's plays.
The Shakespeare's home doubled as a glover's shop for John at the eastern end of the building, with a bran and workshops in the backyard. Lime, alum, egg, dog excrement and urine were used to process the kid, lamp, dog and deer skins to make fine leather. John also sold his wares under the High Cross, one of two market crosses in the town.

Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Caesar.”
On this episode, Dr. Junius Johnson and Fr. Wesley Walker sit down with Heidi White to talk about Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Why does Caesar appear so little in a play in which he is the titular character? How should we think about the actions of Brutus and his co-conspirators? What lessons about friendship can we learn from this work? What is the relationship between rhetoric and crowds? These are just some of the questions that get covered in the episode.
End Notes:
-Junius: Dear Brutus by J.M. Barrie
-Heidi: Caesar Must Die (2012)
-Wesley: The Ides of March (2011)

William Shakespeare was born in this house in Stratford Upon Avon in April 1564. He is widely considered to be the world’s greatest writer and playwright. Stratford Upon Avon is a beautiful place to visit, the town is very picturesque and there are a number of places to see that are connected to Shakespeare.
History
The “birthplace” house in Henley Street belonged to Shakespeare’s parents, John and Mary, which they purchased in 1556. John was a glove-maker by trade, but was also a well respected member of the local community who served on the council and was appointed bailiff (Mayor) in 1568.
John and Mary had eight children, of which William was their third child. William was educated at the local grammar school and would have left school by the age of 15. When William was 18 he married Anne Hathaway, the daughter of a local farmer and they lived together in the cottage at the west end of this property. The couple had three children but tragically their son died in 1596.
Shakespeare left Stratford Upon Avon in 1585 and became an actor and playwright for one of London's leading theatres. By 1597 Shakespeare had become a wealthy and successful playwright. Shakespeare purchased his own house in Stratford upon Avon, New Place where he retired to in 1611. He inherited the Birthplace property in 1601 after his father passed away. William let the property out and it was used as an Inn.
Shakespeare died at the age of 52 on the 23 April 1616 and is buried in the nearby Holy Trinity church. He left this property to his daughter Susanna Hall.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace
The entrance to Shakespeare’s birthplace is through the Shakespeare visitor centre next door, here you can see an exhibition celebrating the writer and his work. If you wish to visit the other Shakespearean houses in Stratford Upon Avon joint tickets can be purchased which will save you money, the tickets are valid for a year and you can revisit as many times as you like. To get to the house you pass through the tranquil garden, where live performances often take place. In Shakespeare’s day the garden would have been used for his father’s business and to grow crops and keep livestock.
You enter the house through the two room cottage at the west end of the property, where Shakespeare lived with his wife Anne, after their marriage. Helpful guides are on hand in three of the rooms to provide information about Shakespeare and his family. You make your way on a self-guided tour through the rest of the house. Much of the house is furnished as it would have appeared in 1574. The Shakespeare family lived in half of the house and the rest was used commercially for John’s various business ventures. In addition to glove-making John was also a tanner, wool and grain merchant and money-lender.
The house is run by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust who care for and run the 5 houses in Stratford Upon Avon connected to Shakespeare. I thoroughly recommend that you visit all of the properties, but especially the birthplace house and Anne Hathaway’s cottage. If you are only visiting the centre of Stratford there are many places only a short walk from the birthplace centre, including New Place and Hall’s Croft where there is a very nice restaurant. The address for the birthplace is:
The Shakespeare Centre
Henley St
Stratford-upon-Avon,
Warwickshire,

About 20 years or so after the construction of the main house, a two-roomed cottage was added onto its western end. We know that Shakespeare's sister Joan and her husband William Hart, a hatter, lived in the early 17th century, but it may have originally housed young Will, aged 18, and his new bride Anne, who was three months 'with child' with her daughter Susanna.
In1601 William inherited the property from his father and it became an inn.
On his death in 1616 William Shakespeare left the property to his daughter Susanna Hall. His sister Joan Hart was allowed to live on in the small attached cottage for the rest of her life, for one shilling a year. After the death of his granddaughter, Elizabeth Barnard, the property passed to Joan's descendants and family ownership continued until the late 18th century.
The house fell into decay during the first four decades of the 19th century and it was put up for sale. Following a national campaign in 1846, the Shakespeare Birthday Committee (later the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust), including such leading figures as Charles Dickens, finally raised the £3,000 necessary to buy the house for the nation in 1847. Dickens organised a series of amateur performances in London, Birmingham and Manchester, in which other noted contemporary literary figures featured, in an attempt to fund the purchase of the Birthplace.
The building was subsequently 'restored' in the 1860s to its appearance in a sketch of 1782 by Richard Greene. Many of the original internal structures, such as the hearths and rear window positions, remain intact.
